I nearly had a heart attack when I read that So Ji Sub entered army training (didn't he just get back from the army!!!) but it turned out he's just doing a refresher for upcoming Road No. 1. Phew, don't scare me so, dramabeans - I can't deal with this. I am so looking forward to Road N.1 though - SJS and Kim Ha Neul, with Choi Min Soo as well, and the writer of Dog/Wolf and director of Dog/Wolf and La Dolce Vita. "Oh my God!" sums up my reaction. What with that, Chuno, Dong Yi, and Jejoongwon, 2009 will hopefully be a hell of a year for historical dramas. I have to say, the thing about Korean army is at least it's only 2/3 years. And it's not so bad for me because most of my favorite kdrama guys have completed their army thing already, some a really long time ago - one of the advantages of going for the older ones :) Also, Gong Yoo and Chun Jung Myung just got out! Please don't let them take as long as So Ji Sub or Go Soo to pick a project! I have only a few favorites who are either still in the army (Lee Dong Wook, Joo Ji Hoon, Eric, Lee Jin Wook) or will go really soon probably (Hyun Bin, Lee Junki). But it's gotta suck if you are a younger man fan - every day must be (as someone on my flist pointed out) like Elvis enlisting :P On the plus side, they all come out with amazing muscles. | |||

1. Mr. Mousie recently ordered tourist materials from Korean Tourism Ministry (all you have to do is request it on a website) and I have been reading them. (a) They make me hungry - the food described sounds yummy, though if one was a vegetarian, he would starve (b) They were describing a particular mountain range and I was reading along going "hmmm, I am not super-outdoorsey but it sounds pret...it is in North Korea!!!" I think I will be skipping that one; and (c) They had a section on Hallyu-related sights. They won my undying approval by putting a picture of Bae Yong Joon in Legend i.e. dangermousie's favorite drama ever. Hmmmm, I think we just might find ourselves at the still-there-with-sets site of the filming. Us and a million Japanese adjummas. chipper2. We were in a bookstore today where I walked by "Robert Pattison: Fated For Fame." Yes. Indeed. 3. I got volume 2 of Otomen yesterday - I think one of the things I love the most about it is that the main character is such a decent guy. Manga heroes are often immature or bad boys - it's nice to see one who is just a good guy. 4. Fell prey to two more mangas today: Love Attack and Rasetsu. Both look good. (there was also another manga by Matsuri Hino, about a guy who is cursed to follow orders of this particular girl, a fact which neither of them likes since she'd rather he was in love with her - but after Vampire Knight becoming trainwreck of weirdness, I was staying away). Love Attack plot: Chiemi Yusa's high-school record is far from perfect. She's already been suspended twice for fighting, and she's not even half-way through her first year! In danger of getting expelled for starting yet another brawl, her teacher approaches her with an unexpected offer: get her classmate Akifumi "Deranged Devil" Hirata, the nastiest fighter in the whole school, to clean up his act, and her record will officially be cleared. Reluctantly she accepts, and immediately goes on the attack. But as she's waiting for him to retaliate, she discovers that he has more in store for her than just a fight! From the creator of Girl Got Game and Heaven!! comes a rollicking brawl of a good time as the roughest guy and girl in school get themselves into trouble--and find themselves in love. I have started reading this and it's hilarious and I love both leads. Rasetsu plot: Rasetsu is in a job of a ghost/demon hunter. Problem is, one demon marked her with a curse - if she does not find true love by age 20, he will come and get her. Well, maybe it will help that Yako Hoshino, a young man with spiritual powers of his own, comes to the agency seeking help. Rasetsu bears a striking resemblance to his old love Yurara - yup, it's a Yurara spin-off. | |||

cranky![]() Yes, I mock for I am bitter. Joo Ji Hoon, one of my favorite kdrama actors, has been tried for drug use, with prosecutors demanding a year in jail for him. He'll probably get it. Seeing how pretty he is, he will probably not fare too well. GRRRR. I am bitter. He is one of my all-time favorites and will now not have any career anywhere ever. GRRR. I clothe my bitterness in sparkles. In sparkly news of a different sort: "Having girly hobbies doesn't make you less MANLY" Ahahahahahaaaa! Today, acting totally on impulse, I bought first volume of a manga called Otomen. It sounded too hilarious not to. No summary I can give is going to be better than the summary from the cover, so here it is: Asuka Masamune is a guy who loves girly things--sewing, knitting, making cute stuffed animals and reading shojo comics. But in a world where boys are expected to act manly, Asuka must hide his beloved hobbies and play the part of a masculine jock instead. Ryo Miyakozuka, on the other hand, is a girl who can't sew or bake a cake to save her life. Asuka finds himself drawn to Ryo, but she likes only the manliest of men! Can Asuka ever show his true self to anyone, much less to the girl he's falling for? LOL. Seriously. LOL. Now, in real life, I like my men pretty darn manly, but for manga purposes, this is comedy gold. Also, I went browsing because I thought this would make a fun anime and found out that a live-action jdrama version of this is coming in August. Heee. I will be sure to check it out. | |||

| Feb. 19th, 2009 @ 09:04 am My Shameless Descent: I watch a Korean Variety Show | |||
|---|---|---|---|
Current Mood:
Yes. I have completed my descent: I have watched an episode of a Korean variety show, We Got Married. chipperBlame Kim Hyun Joong (currently playing Ji Hoo in Boys Over Flowers and the leader of the pop band SS501) and my growing WGM has a uniquely Korean set-up. I cannot imagine a US show like that at all. It takes a number of (single) male and female celebrities, matches them at random and has them 'pretend' to be a married couple - i.e. do things married couples normally do - go grocery shopping, go on trips, decorate a house etc. Sort of playact at marriage but in their real personas. Gladdening many a RPShipper's heart in the process, I am sure. The reason I watched it? Kim Hyun Joong appeared on the show for a number of episodes (the couples keep coming and being replaced) 'starring' opposing Hwangbo, another musician. I watched one ep so far (or at least only KHJ parts - not interested in the other 'couples'). Heee. HEEEEE. LOL. It's guaranteed to make you LOL and cheer you up (I was rather down yesterday). Also, now I can see why he was cast as Ji Hoo. I wondered about that. True, he is gorgeous, but so are a lot of Korean actors. But now I see - it's pretty close to his real-life personality (or at least the way he comes across in the media, as who knows what his true personality is like). Such an oddball! My favorite moment? They go on a 'romantic' fishing trip and he lugs a whole bunch of manhwa with him because it might get boring. Methinks I found a soulmate - I always have a book with me just in case :) Ungallant about his match (and looking scarily like Yamapi): ![]() Isn't it what Ji Hoo would wear? ![]() When asked by Hwangbo how old does he think she is? (She is 6 years older). Ahahahahahaa! ![]() ![]() This was my favorite. I loled so hard I think I almost woke the baby. ![]() So? My verdict? Not something I will marathon or anything, but I do plan slowly but steadily to watch all of KHJ eps. Yeah, I am hopeless. Sorry! It's funny - he doesn't really send my hormones into overdrive, the way Lee Min Ho can do | |||

According to Popseoul, the Korean Ministry of Culture is interested in seeking a military exemption for Rain, on the grounds that Hallyu entertainers should be exempt.... Brilliant idea. I am all for it,* but where were they when Gong Yoo got drafted? I think they should just form a drama/music division in the military and make the woobies do dramas and videos, and all proceeds can go to the military or what not :P * The only upside, from the view of a fangirl, of the draft, is that they come out with even better muscles, sorta like jail :P But waiting two years for those seems rather harsh. Because it's all about meeeeee.... *uses icon of one of the beneficiaries of the military muscles* | |||
| Jun. 5th, 2008 @ 03:35 pm Sandglass, here I come... | |||

I have just discovered Sandglass, a 24-episode Korean drama that I am dying to get. bouncyMade in 1995, this would be the oldest kdrama I have watched but I simply must have it. Final episodes of it apparently averaged over 60% rating (!!!) and it put SBS (the station) on the map. It also stars the Super Evil Villain from The Legend as one of the three protagonists, which is something else... The story is fairly straightforward in the outline: set in the 1960s-1980s, it follows three individuals and through them, the Korean political events of the times. Tae-Soo (Choi Min Soo), who grows up as a school trouble-maker, temporarily attempts to mend his ways with the friendship of the studious, regime-oriented Woo-Suk (Park Sang Won), but seeing that he is the son of a Communist guerilla, college and any promising legitimate occupation is closed to him, and he eventually becomes a rising member of the mob. Woo-Suk, of course, ends up studying and eventually rising high as a prosecutor, a bit too incorruptible for the regime around them. The third protagonist in the story is Hye-Rin (Ko Hyun Jung), a wealthy, disaffected daughter of a casino owner who becomes a student activist, and is involved with both men. What really interests me is not the love story (which is apparently satisfying but strictly secondary) but the fact that it deals with a whole bunch of contemporary hot topic political issues of the time (totalitarian rule, mistreatment of activist, class issues), including, most famously, the Gwangju Massacre. I mean, how could I not DIE to watch a drama about which the UCLA review states "Perhaps no other drama has ever represented the intertwining of the personal, political, and social so clearly and movingly. Using the stories of Tae-soo, Woo-shik, and Hye-ran to illustrate the intertwining of business, politics, and crime, Sandglass examines Korean society as a place beset with corruption and oppression, and really gives voice to a society crying out for justice. Its effectiveness for reminding Koreans of their recent history has even been credited in part for helping lead to the arrest of the former dictator Jeon Do-hwan." !!!!! The reviews are all crazy raves: one here, another one here, another here, and a fourth here. If it's a third as good as the reviews make it sound, I am going to love it. | |||

1. Apparently, there are rumors that Rain is planning to make a drama again, called Four Seasons and co-starring Jeon Ji-Hyun (star of the Sassy Girl movie). Even better, it's by the director of Something Happened in Bali and screenwriter of A Love to Kill (two of my fave dramas), as well as MISA and Thank You. chipperExpect angst with that writer/director combo. We'll be lucky to get away with maiming and beatings in the streets. But no angst on my side, as long as it happens. 2. In confirmed, non-rumory news, Kang Dong Won is making a fantasy movie! Jeon Wo Chi with Lim Soo Jung (MISA, Cyborg). Plot: In the film, Dong-won Kang plays main character Jeon Woo-chi. His character was born over 500 years ago, but became imprisoned in a portrait. To break free and walk the earth again he makes a pact to capture the “manpaseokjeok” (a musical instrument that gives magical powers), before rival Hwa-dam (Yun-seok Kim) is able to do so. Meanwhile, it seems Jeon Woo-chi is more of a lover than a hero and he becomes enraptured with In-kyeong Seo (Su-jeong Lim), a budding actress and possibly someone he loved many centuries ago. 3. There are also rumors that Song Il-Gook signed on to do another period epic drama. Yay, say I. Man was born to sit on a horse and wield a sword. And angst hotly while doing so. (Side note: it will never cease to amuse me that he married a lady judge. It's like a set-up for a drama! Seriously!) 4. Not rumors but delicious fact. Director of Coffee Prince has picked his next drama. Subject? Figure skaters. Yes, indeed. To be called Triple and to star Jeong Il-woo and Min Hyo-Rin. No idea who either of them are, and frankly, don't care! Kdrama deliciousness plus sequined deliciousness of figure skating (one of my fave things) combibed together? Can the world handle this much awesomeness? I guess we'll find out. ETA: 5. How could I forget. Jang Hyuk (Thank You, Robbers) and Kim Ming Jun (the sexy rebel Sang-Baek from Damo, In-Soon is pretty etc) have been cast as leads in a drama about gamblers and the mob. YES. To be called Tazza. Female lead not cast yet. | |||

I found this very fascinating...(especially in light of drooling comments on ONTD about Lee Byung-Hun in GIJoe promos). contentWho the Hell is Daniel Henney? By Ada Tseng http://www.asiaarts.ucla.edu/article.as This is an analysis of a really good-looking man named Daniel Henney and his potential to shatter preconceived notions of Asian American men in America. On February 21st, 2008, Variety reported a new addition to the ever-growing X-Men Origins: Wolverine cast. With various versions of black-and-white chiseled glamour shots accompanying his name, Daniel Henney, 28, was set to portray Agent Zero, a super-powered secret agent who, along with Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), Sabertooth (Liev Schreiber) and Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds), is part of the Weapons X project in the X-Men prequel. The casting announcement's repost on MovieWeb.com elicited user comments from comic fanboys, who derided the overflow of characters in the film, debated whether Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool could handle a spinoff series, and generally heckled each other for no reason. Then came the winning question: "Who the hell is Daniel Henney??" They only needed to go to the next Google search result to find out. Just Jared, a celebrity gossip site likely frequented by the commercially-viable 18-34 female demographic, had also reposted the Daniel Henney/Agent Zero story. After a deluge of capital letters and emoticons, a "WAAAHHH!!!," and a "i might cry in the theatre from all this beauty," it was clear that this audience knew who Daniel Henney was. And if they didn't, they wanted to know. ( The rest of the article ) | |||

Mr. Mousie and I watched In Bruges tonight (with Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes). It just opened and it was WONDERFUL. Both darkly funny, and sad. Plus, we've been to Bruges so it was extra cool. contentWe have also watched eps 11-12 of Hong Gil Dong. Caps and meta coming, but for now, all I have to say is: a. it gets better with every single ep b. How can the same drama make me LOL like a maniac and get weepy-eyed? ( Spoiler for eps 11 and 12, about favorite bits and some caps ) I have also continued with my watch of Que Sera Sera and have just finished ep 15. It's still incredibly excellent. ( Spoilers for eps 11-15 ) ( Some awesome caps of manpain! ) Last but not least, the amazing I loved Bali so much. It's like a darker QSS actually (or, since QSS is later, I suppose QSS is like a happier Bali). Bali is one of these impossible dramas: there are some characters you want to murder (Jae-Min's entire family should have been strangled in their sleep) but they are nasty in a very realistic way, the ending is the bleakest in any kdrama I've ever seen (but makes perfect character sense),there is a certain sense of realism about the world (poverty sucks, the powerful are unjust, damaged people can go off the rails), but the thing that keeps drawing me to it the most (I will actually rewatch it once I finish QSS) is the incredibly screwed-up, irresistable, intense love story: the interactions between Jae-Min and Song-Joo are some of my favorite things in the dramas. And Jae-Min himself, even though what he really needed was years of therapy, since it would have been impossible to go back in time and get child protective services involved, he happens to be one of my very favorite drama heroes. Which probably says worrying things about me, but whatever... Oh, and a little reading update: ( Books am reading or about to start ) | |||

I know I am spamming and I apologize. calmBut come on! It's the last post for the night, I promise. Heh. Oh, Korea! Even their music videos are incredibly depressing. Here is a MV for the song 'Why' which is...a work of art, in some respects. I mean, it's only a bit over five munutes long but it manages to cram all the angst of MISA + Autumn Tale + other angsty kdramas, into such a short running time! It's like the pure distillation of the kdrama/kmovie aesthetic (if you've ever been curious to find out what that is and don't want to spend time watching 15 hours of something, this is a good choice). We have gorgeous cinematography, love quadrangles, impossible love, and oh yeah...the summary of it is really 'everybody dies.' I swear. The last shot is o_O. The MV is set during the Korean War (but was made in 2001). Interestingly it stars a whole bunch of really famous kdrama actors: Kong Sang Woo, Lee Yo Won (the OTP of Bad Love!), Gong Yoo, and Ryu Shi Won. Snark and prettiness aside, this really made me think: why does Korean drama have such a fascination with the idea of noble suffering and romantic death? I find this running so incredibly strongly through Korean dramas, movies, and music videos. Much, much more strongly than even in that other bastion of sad endings and angst-in-fiction, Japan. I wonder what it is that makes it so? Why such a fascination with love that is painful and ends in death? Or illness? Or family tragedy? Grace in suffering? I wonder if it's some sort of reflection of Korea's incredibly troubled 20th century history. (Just as I've read that the prevalence of 'destruction of Tokyo' motifs in Japanese fiction is a remnant of the psychic wound of the firebombing of Tokyo as well as the nuclear bombs). After all, American fiction is probably the most fixated on the happy endings and status quo out there, and USA had a relatively peaceful last century...No idea, just thinking 'out loud.' | |||

Because I think posts without pictures are boring: cheerful![]() While I have womanfully resisted starting the taiga drama Yoshitsune even after Yoshitsune, a 15th century chronicle translated by Helen C. McCullough. I have a huge thing for historical chronicles and would have gotten this anyway. So far, the only feudal Japanese lit I read was Sei Sho-nagon's Pillow Book which was fascinating. I suppose Yoshitsune will be very different as it's written by a man. Lynn Guest's Children of Hachiman (the novelization of the clan struggle in which Yoshitsune was involved, with Yoshitsune and his brother as main characters). Kara Dalkey's Genpei, which takes the whole story and writes it as a fantasy (I am really looking forward to this because this could be very interesting). I have also gotten my hands on a bunch of books about Tomoe Gozen (a female samurai of the era) by Jessica Amanda Salmonson. They are supposed to be good. Actually, This is a wonderful website for listing almost any historical fiction out there that deals with Japan, that is in English. I am going to be pillaging that list like whoa. Did I mention that my wonderful husband, in addition to getting me a gift certificate to nehaflix (an internet bollywood store) also bought me the first two volumes in Liz Williams' Inspector Chen series. The series is a fantasy set in future Singapore, where the realms of heaven, hell and earth co-exist. It's part mystery, part fantasy, part funniness. I read a book in the series recently and fell in love. P.S. If anyone can recommend any good books about Korea, fiction or non, that are dealing with pre 1945 Korea, I will be very grateful. There are plenty of histories out there dealing with modern stuff, but I know it already. It's really hard to find stuff about stuff prior to that (fiction or non). | |||

Jae-Hee!!!!! After finishing DGCH, I now crave more Jae Hee. So, on chipper![]() Plot: A young drifter enters strangers' houses - and lives - while owners are away. He spends a night or a day squatting in, repaying their unwitting hospitality by doing laundry or small repairs. His life changes when he runs into a beautiful woman in an affluent mansion who is ready to escape her unhappy, abusive marriage. It is by the director of the gorgeous Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter and Spring. Here is an unspoilery, short professional review. ( Some photographs. It looks gorgeous and slightly surreal ) And I also want to find and watch Art of Fighting which is a movie he did in 2006, about a bullied student who learns to fight to strike back. No love story though, hmmmm. It sounds really good, if not as good as 3-Iron. It’s rather interesting that in both of them he seems to play a quiet, introverted loner. Very different from Chun-Hyang. In other movie news, on March 30, there is a movie opening which I am extremely amused by the concept of. It is Kazakhstan’s Nomad. I love period battle epics and eeee, sounds fun, even if in part it’s because the head of government Nazarbayev was supposed to be really into this film and because the putative Kazakh heroes are played by Hispanic actors. Plot (from a review): The mystic Kazakh warrior Oraz (a stalwart Jason Scott Lee) tells a sultan that his newborn son has been "chosen by the stars to unite all Kazakhs" and thereby overthrow the oppressive rule of the invader Jungars. To that end, Oraz raises the son, Mansur (Mexican actor Kuno Becker), and another boy, Erali (Jay Hernandez), as brothers, along with a youth from each of the tribes, to become superb warriors capable of defeating the despotic Jungar ruler (Doskhan Zholhzhaxynov). The close bond between Mansur and Oraz finds them falling in love with the same girl (Ayanat Yesmagambetova) and caught in a particularly cruel twist. Heh. Pics: ![]() ( More Pics ) And then there is the Thai Tears of the Black Tiger which is part Western (set in Thailand!!!), part star-crossed romance. Heee. | |||
