Sep. 30th, 2009 @ 06:09 pm Largely about the entertainment of Taiwan...
1. Say what you will about Taiwanese dramas, they certainly deliver on the kissing front:

From Easy Fortune Happy Life - now that the drama is over, I'll probably watch it with help of fast-forward to mitigate the heroine's horrific mugging. I love my angsty twdramas but most of the cracky ones leave me scratching my head.

2. Speaking of crack, there is an upcoming Mike He/Charlene Choi drama Calling for Love whose hero is supposed to be a big idol star who actually is only doing it to pay off family debts and secretly yearns to be a graduate student. I mean, as this and upcoming Summer of Bubbles indicate, if you are broke or otherwise in monetary trouble, the easiest thing to do is to become an idol - after all, everyone seems to do it. HA.

3. Mark Chao (from Black and White *swoon*) apparently has an upcoming drama filming where he is the lead. Thank you, drama tptb.

4. I will never stop laughing at the concept of panda superheroes drama. Yeah. Go go go go you fierce Pandamen!

5. Have a little Vanness/Ady (Next Stop Happiness in few days YES):

In conclusion, I am not watching a single currently-airing drama. However, it's about to change with the near-simulataneous arrival of Next Stop Happiness (Taiwan), You're Beautiful (Korea) and IRIS (Korea). Still, my goal is to finish Smile before that - I love my Matsujun.

Instead of doing various productive things with my time because I woke up a good hour before I had to, I decided to use up the freak occurrence by, what else, rewatching bits of Worlds Within. This obsession must stop :D

Being a generous soul, I have decided to share some of the resulting screencaps. It's their first night together and it starts out a teeny bit awkward ('do I offer him clothes to change into?' 'how do I start' etc) but as soon as there is physical contact it moves into pure hot very soon.

I am sure I could have capped even more open-mouth action but there are only so many times I can rewatch Hyun Bin and Song Hye Kyo make out in a loop and claim it's for research without losing my last shred of dignity :D I want to see MOAR!!!

Have fun. They certainly are )

Aug. 20th, 2009 @ 07:58 pm Thursday evening blabberings
1. I have long meant to purchase a region-free player and have finally done so, being spurred on by my desire to own a lovely official and English-subbed R3 Worlds Within dvds.

2. For a second day in a row I had a lovely evening interude of drinking coffee in a neighborhood shop and reading while baby alternately slept and ate her fist. Today, the book was Cuba Diaries by Isadora Tattlin, who wrote her account of living in Cuba (as wife of one of foreigners working in Cuba) in the early 1990s. It's a fascinating, well-written book about a place that is rather a mystery to me, like to most Americans (I think the embargo is stupid, but that is a whole separate topic).

3. This is a promotional photo for an upcoming movie Paju. I don't really have any interest in the movie itself (it's about a woman who investigates the death of her older sister and starts to fall for sister's boyfriend herself even though she suspects him in the death) but the poster is freaking gorgeous.

4. I have found my favorite scene in the entire universe (the scene where Hyun Bin comes back to Song Hye Kyo in Worlds Within) on youtube. There are no subs and it's nowhere near as wonderful without context, but it's still beyond lovely (and angsty and hot). Have a quick look:

(I have also found this adorable collection of WW outtakes.)

I really hope somebody reads this because it literally took me hours.

I spent the evening watching Worlds Within. I have finished it, and it's official - it is my most favorite drama of all time, and my favorite show from anywhere of all time, except for Farscape.

I think I won't be watching drama for a few days at least because nothing will compare to this in any way.

And now for very lengthy liveblog of eps 14-16, with some caps )

I have over 2600 caps for the last few eps so it will take me time to sort them but I should and then expect a giant picspam.

OT: I loooove my Spyware Doctor. Best $35 I ever spent. It just detected and got rid of a rather nasty virus which was making my internet not work at all and for such an internet addict as I am, that was a nightmare :) Thank you, Spyware Doctor!

Aug. 16th, 2009 @ 02:14 am Worlds Within has the best female characters I've ever seen in a kdrama
Is there a single female character on Worlds Within who is NOT awesome? It doesn't feel like a typical Korean drama in its attitudes at all - these women are not self-sacrificing saints - they are capable of sacrifice to the same degree as men, but they are ambitious, strong-willed, knowing what they want. And not a single one has a life which solely revolves around a man.

We have our heroine (oooh, I bet the fangirls hated her) who is a dedicated, driven perfectionist of a professional, who is pretty good, and who unapologetically declares to the hero she has no desire to have kids because it would interfere with her career and that she wants to keep their relationship a secret at work because office gossip might be detrimental to their careers. This is not portrayed as at all wrong or bad on her part (it is made clear that it is something that might be a problematic difference of opinion in a relationship later but that is an entirely different thing!). Did I mention that the heroine tells the hero she prefers compliments on her shots to compliments on her personality? And that a large part of the reason they click so well is because they talk about their work together and he is always so proud when he sees her do well.

We have a veteran star actress who has had multiple marriages and divorces (and this is not viewed as making her awful), who is a consummate professional, insisting on shooting a scene right after she hears her mother is dead, because there is no other time. She likes working with the heroine even despite the fact that heroine and she have personality clashes, because she respects the heroine's smarts. She is good friends with the hero without any cougarishness on her part and takes back an old old flame on the condition he will not overly intrude on her life and not care if she goes out with others sometimes.

We have a famous talented and much-wanted screenwriter, who is 40 and single, and it is not portrayed as a lack on her part - poor thing, better off with a man. No, she is fulfilled and needs nothing else.

We have the mothers of hero and heroine, neither of whom is demonized and both of whom have, in their vastly different ways, carved out tolerable lives for themselves in some not ideal circumstances.

We have the tough young assistant director who can outwork a lot of men, swears and drinks like a sailor.

We have two senior veteran actresses who are professional and very tough.

And we have my favorite secondary female character, a brand new actress who got her role of a lifetime (starring role in a period drama made by a director all of whose dramas hit insane ratings) by not just talent but dogged persistence in hounding the director until he gave her a chance to show whether she is qualified, and insane work ethic (she insists on doing her own stunts). She is forthright, cheerful and unabashedly interested in the director 'that way' - the best part is she chases him not in any sort of a meek "I am going to weep if you don't like me" kind of way, but in a bulldozer (yet non-crazy) fashion of "if you don't like me, I am not going to mope as it's your loss, but since I like you, I see no point in concealing my feelings and not going for what I want." The best part is when they end up sleeping together and he (because he has rather a fear of emotional connections, though it's clear to anyone he's totally fallen for her) tells her "just because we slept together once, doesn't mean we have anything between us" and...she grins and says "OK" and leaves and you can see him be totally taken aback. That was awesome. Oh, and did I mention the below scene happens after his 'oh it was all totally meaningless' declaration? Yeah, keep telling yourself that :P

Aug. 15th, 2009 @ 10:06 pm Worlds Within has just become my favorite drama ever
Am in the middle of episode 7 of Worlds Within - guuuuuh, how does it get more perfect with every episode. It's official, this is my favorite drama of all time. That's right, folks - it's better than Legend, better than Pride, better than Mars, better than...in my estimation.

One of the things I love so much is how any conflict feels real - Joon Young's Mom, e.g. is shallow and money-and-status obsessed but it's in a very realistic way (her warning not to date Ji Oh if he has no money, her interest if he has status) not a usual OTT drama way. Or take Ji Oh and Joon Young's building conflict about their different backgrounds - it's no BOF craziness but the fact that he feels somewhat inferior because she is clearly from such an upperclass wealthy family when he is nothing of the sort, but also because their different backgrounds lead to rather different takes on life - see their different attitudes toward money. It's all wonderfully relatable stuff.

And the OTP! Oh, the OTP! Their moments are so there and their chemistry is ridiculously insane. I think what kills me the most is the way he looks at her when she does not notice - he is utterly besotted. GUUUUH.

Caps of sheer perfection )

Aug. 15th, 2009 @ 03:28 pm This is definitely going on all-time favorites list
(Baby is asleep and Mr. Mousie is working so I have more time for World Within.)

I literally screamed "what the hell, bitch!" when Jung Young's awful mother appeared just as Ji Oh and Jung Young went back to JY's apartment to enjoy a very rare free weekend (Momster used her daughter's apartment as a crash pad for gambling and drinking). Because it means their weekend is shot and they were so giddy about it (not to mention it introduces Ji Oh, who becomes adorably flustered) to JY's family when JY might not want that yet at this stage). I think I am ridiculously overinvested.

But look at them! They are so wonderful together!

This is so good, you guys! I could just watch these people forever, them doing nothing but working and loving and fighting and living their lives.

Aug. 14th, 2009 @ 01:01 am Worlds Within is the most amazing thing I have seen in a year (nonspoilery)
Current Mood: bouncy

Oh my God.

This has seriously fried my brain.

It's from ep 4 of Worlds Within.

On a less hormonal note: I am so in love with this drama. You guys. You guys, it's really late here and I should have been in bed hours ago but I keep watching WW without being able to stop. It's in the running to becoming my favorite drama EVER. Ever. Beating Legend's almost 2-year-long supremacy. Whoa. And to think I only started it out on a completely random whim.

If I was doing my Top 5 otps now, these two would so be on the list - their interactions are so real and 'present' - the way they bounce off each other, and talk about everything, and fight, and do these little things. Just GUUUUH. I could see myself in this world.

And the whole thing is so pitch-perfect I found myself crying in one totally random scene - it was not sad or anything but the scene was so perfect I started crying from that.

It's funny, because while I love Hyun Bin to bits, I probably wouldn't think of him if someone asked me my most favorite Korean actor - I'd answer Kang Ji Hwan or Lee Jun Ki or Gong Yoo. But I should definitely revise this response - I have seen him in four dramas, and two of those (WW and Friend) are among what I would consider art - something I can count on fingers of one hand with dramas, and Snow Queen was also amazing and gorgeous and in my all-time favorites. 3 out of 4 in my Top 10? That's quite a feat. (Ironically, the drama that made him a household name, Kim Sam Soon, is one I dislike immensely, even though its ratings were bigger than the ratings of WW, Snow Queen and Friend combined). I think at this point I will watch whatever he is in.

As to Song Hye Kyo, she was my entry to kdramas - Full House was my very first kdrama and the one that made me fall for them - it was also the first time I felt such a visceral love and protectiveness of the heroine. I've liked her in what I have seen since (All In) but WW is a whole new height.

Also, please don't spoil me for WW. Normally I don't mind (and even enjoy) spoilers but not here - I am too in love. I did find out some angst is coming and I can't bear it - I love them too much as characters and a couple.

ETA: Sometimes people ENRAGE me. Some commenter on viikii called Song Hye Kyo's character a slut because she had sex with the guy she was dating and it clearly wasn't the first or the fifth time she had sex and she had the nerve not to be embarassed the morning after but matter-of-fact and happy and actually *gasp* comment about last night. Clearly a super-slut to beat them all. And I bet the commenter was a woman, too. UGH.

Current Mood: chipper
1. I am so excited for the upcoming 'special' (i.e. short) drama My Love, Ugly Duckling because it stars Kang Ji Hwan and Li Ji Ah, two of my favorites (Hong Gil Dong and Sujini - ahhhh).

Here is a youtube teaser - I still have no idea what it is about but who cares.

2. To the list of upcoming 2009 dramas I am excited about (Take Care of the Lady, Chuno, IRIS, Heading to the Ground) we add a fifth - Suspicious Heroes, about a guy who loses everything and then becomes some sort of a hero. Blah blah blah, who cares, it stars Lee Jun Ki and Han Ji Min. OMGOMGOMG. To air in November.

3. All those who are not watching Swallow the Sun, why not? As my list of favorite OTPs seemed to indicate, my preferred ship type is of the 'he worships the ground she walks on' variety and StS has it in such delicious abundance.

Here is a scene from ep 11 as summarized by Luv from soompi: JW was telling SH about his past...how he was abandoned right after he was born. He told her about the his memory of her bright eyes...he wanted to destroy the farm so she would like him. (She's rich and he's poor...if he destroys the farm then they'll be equal). But he knows...she's someone he can't have and he shed tears. He told himself that next time when they meet...he'll have confidence in himself.(This part is when they're still kids). But when they met again...he already sold his soul. He's shameful and can only look at her from far away. Falling in love with her would be a sin so he'll keep the pain to himself. SH said she had never seen eyes that were so sad. She said they should comfort each other and cure each other.

Mmm. And then he leaves her, leaving her a note that he will come back for sure and be worthy. Oh YES.

See caps from such a delicious scene )

4. I have now watched the first episode of Worlds Within and I adore it ridiculously - is so lowkey but very effective.

Aug. 12th, 2009 @ 09:51 am More kissing than in an entire year of jdramas
Current Mood: bouncy
Oh my GUH...Somebody compiled all the kissing scenes in Worlds Within into a youtube video. Now for most kdramas (and other dramas) that would result in a 10-second video. Not here.

I woke up in a very bad mood but after seeing this (I was looking for something else and stumbled onto this by accident) and watching it twice, I have SUCH a huge grin on my face. (Even if it does make me feel rather voyeuristic as Hyun Bin and Song Hye Kyo are now dating :P. The way I feel voyeuristic watching Lovers because Kim Jung Eun and Lee Seo Jin were dating at the time).

You know, I didn't watch Worlds Within when it was airing beecause I have heard it was a very low-key drama 'jdramaish' and you know me - that's not why I watch kdramas. But hmmm - I am so very shallow and will definitely check it out now, especially since I will watch almost anything with either Hyun Bin or Song Hye Kyo anyway.

So, yes, I am going to give WW a chance - if for no other reason than that scene in 0:24-0:54 in the vid above - if any gorgeous guy did that to me - carry me bodily through the entire house without breaking the kiss, I'd be his forever if he wanted it :P

ETA: I just watched the ending of WW just to make sure it was something I would love. And EEEEEEEE! Why did nobody tell me of how awesome WW looks set to be - this is the first time I have seen something I would consider 'real couple interaction' in a kdrama. SQUEE. I could so imagine self and Mr. Mousie like that. HEEEEEE. I am starting with this ASAP. If there are slow parts, I will get through them just by staring at Hyun Bin and spacing out.

This post is inspired by a conversation with [info]ambergold

And thus, I present to you the Dong Chul/Young Ran guide to East of Eden. If you are like me, and the thought of 56 episodes is horrifying, especially if convoluted politics and construction put you to sleep and the thought of watching the Villain and is family go around their boring lives is unpleasant, I encourage you to watch Dangermousie's Version (or at least read about it behind the cut). Not only is it much shorter, it focuses solely on the awesome ship that is Dong Chul and Young Ran (otherwise known as Grace).

She is a feisty Mob Princess who knows what she wants (him). He is a day laborer with tragic family history and mad fight skills who becomes a mobster underling to her father in order to protect his family. The one condition the Mob Boss makes? He will protect our hero and give him power if Dong Chul promises to never reciprocate the feelings of his wayward daughter.

O-M-G. Angst and unresolved sexual tension ensues. I finally understood the appeal of slumming.

There is kissing, slit wrists, motorcycles, fights to protect the kidnapped OTP (yes, fights - plural), time jumps, forced weddings, evil fathers, manly and womanly weeping, running on the beach, sleepovers, and more sexual chemistry then should be legal.

So, why do I ship them so? I confess I love the ship all the more because it totally snuck up on me - like most viewers, I went into EoE expecting (and excited about) the promised love story between Song Seung Heon and Lee Da Hae. But then something happened - Lee Yeon Hee showed up and she was so funny, gorgeous, and adorable - I fell in love with her character. And I fell in love with their insane chemistry, and then the sheer power of the OTP to hit all my kinks sucked me in - I adored that here was a female character who was utterly forward about what she wanted (she is clearly the initiator in all their early encounters) and it was not portrayed as stalkery or ridiculous. Plus, it was pretty wonderful for someone like Dong Chul who gave a lot of love but was starved of receiving it to have someone who was so open in affection. Anyway, I kept loving them but being pretty sure it was going to end so he could 'move on' and be with Lee Da Hae. Only a funny thing happened - we reached the halfway mark and he and LDH had barely met and he was still weeping over Young Ran and she was still madly in love with him and...I still get giddy to think that my OTP actually became the drama's OTP when I had no expectations of the sort!

And thus it begins...Warning: very picture heavy: DC/YR in eps 5-24 )

When we continue, even an insane asylum and a marriage can't break up our OTP!

But ehhh, who cares, I am in it for Song Seung Heon.

Pictures and snarky comments )

I am going to finish this tomorrow, I can only take the OTT in small dozes.

You know, all this watching of He Was Cool is reminding me I never finished East of Eden despite my mad love for it in the beginning. It was just too freaking long (68 eps OMG), and had a huge cast of characters a lot of whom I did not care about (Shin Tae Hwan and his whole family bored me only slightly less than did Lee Da Hae and her people). Plus, the fandom shipper wars got me annoyed. But hey, it's over so I can do selective watching and the shipper stuff bugs me not at all since my ship won :P

So, selective viewing of later eps, here I come. After all, they promise me this:

And this (I swear, it's as if the makers made their own mv for those two :D):

Clearly am also not the only shipper as people make tons of Dong Chul/Grace MVs.

1. I have figured out a long time ago that if there is one genre that never ever without exception works for me it is a Japanese over-the-top high school comedy, with hordes of malnourished, hair-gelled boys, girl heroine optional. Every other genre I am generally iffy on has exceptions (e.g. I am not big on office lady romances with younger men as a rule, but I adore Brand and Sapuri) but this one does not. I blame Hana Yori Dango for the existence of this subgenre - Hanadan wasn't a comedy but a romance with some very funny and some very angsty parts, but it was also a wildly successful adaptation of a shoujo manga and it started a trend. Yup - the one other thing I dislike as much as OTT teeny comedies are jdrama adaptations of shoujo manga. Except for Hanadan, I've disliked every single one of them. Hana Kimi. Zettai Kareshi. *shudder*

So please then explain to me why on earth am I so excited about Otomen which is, you guessed it, a jdrama adaptation of a shoujo manga set in a high school with a lot of (presumably malnourished and hair-gelled) boys. I love the manga, but then I did love both Hana Kimi and Zettai Kareshi as mangas. And yet, I can't help it. I want to watch!

Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy?

2. Ahahahahahaaaaa

This is from ep 5 of Easy Fortune Happy Life which I shall henceforce rename "Kissorama". Seriously - he's kissed her in the first ep, twice if you count 'past life' stuff (and there was other kissing too), here it is fifth ep - when does he have the time in-between hiring killers to off her? :)

I am addicted to EFHL even if it's very silly :) Also, apparently, as of now, Hubby doesn't know that the mysterious fiancee he's hired a hit man for is that plucky village girl he's been having a fun running fight with. LOL. Ahhh, Taiwan.

3. Because thinking of Hanadan made me remember this: I got so annoyed when I read someone's comment somewhere that the reason BOF went off the rails in the second half was because it was a Korean drama - they said something to the effect that the second half became very kdrama. I got so irritated by the assumption that kdramas are by definition bad. Ummm, no. Not only are there are plenty of well-done kdramas but the reason second half of BOF sucked was not because it was a kdrama but because it was a badly written one. No kdrama gives its heroine a personality transplant and its hero a lobotomy in the middle with no explanation. No good kdrama. One could easily Koreanify Hanadan without doing that. I really hate it when people have a knee-jerk reaction about dramas because of their place of origin. Through a lot of drama-watching, I have found, e.g. that I am most compatible with Korean dramas, but it doesn't mean I assume Japanese or Taiwanese dramas are inferior - there are plenty of good dramas from both places. An average Korean drama is more likely to appeal to me than an average Japanese drama but I am hardly going to never ever give any Japanese drama a chance because OMG it's from Japan.

4. Someone at soompi is having the following opinion about Brilliant Legacy: Heroine betrayed Secondary Guy by not loving him back when he was so nice to her and did things for her (I hasten to add that in BL when he confessed she told him she doesn't feel anything yet and as soon as she figured out she likes someone else, she informed him). Basically, the guy was nice to her so she owes him to love him. Hello, feminism. (Don't even get me started on discussions in fandom where guy X or guy Y should end up with the girl because he 'deserves' her through being hot/good/whatever. A woman is not a prize).

My desire to watch Friend is so great that I am putting up with the censoring.

This drama is so ridiculously good, it's mind-boggling.

I have to say, Hyun Bin is gorgeous, true (I think he is one of the most gorgeous Korean actors out there, which is quite something) but he is also a really good actor - unexpectedly so because usually good looks and acting ability do not go together (check out Daniel Henney for proof :D). He is freaking me out in Friend.

Here he is, stabbing a rival mobster while dialing that rival's boss (and his former friend) so he can hear his subordinate die on the phone. He is nothing like either the sweet, masochistic woobie of Snow Queen or the immature brat of Kim Sam Soon (I did not care for that drama or his character, but he played him well and was nothing like the SQ or Friend guys)

And on a different note, gotta love Taiwanese dramas. Compared to Japanese dramas where a liplock even if it happens has all the passion of dead fish and frequency of a meteor shower, this is what we have in the first ep of Easy Fortune Happy Life:

These are hero and secondary girl. While discussing the iminent demise of his grandpa.

Another scene with hilarious double entendres )

EFHL is not (unlike Friend) art. It's not even quality. It is however, so far, entertaining dumb fun. But whom am I kidding - I am watching for Lan Chen Long and his cheekbones. The man has literally no bad angle. Anywhere. Between him and Vic Zhou, I gotta say Barbie Hsu has amazing taste in boyfriends.
