Oh, Hanadan, how you still own me...
If you watch only one drama in your life, make it Hana Yori Dango. Yeah, I mean it. And Hanadan isn't even my most favorite drama (that would be Mars), it's just so...everything. More specifically, watch both seasons because it's that weird show where season 1 is awesome and season 2 is awesome, but combined, they are greater than the sum of its parts.

See this second season MV:

I spent both part of lunch and evening reading manga in the local Borders (if there is anything better than drinking strong coffee and reading shoujo when it's raining outside, I have yet to discover). This included volume 26 of Hana Yori Dango. More about that particular volume below, but it made me think about Hanadan in general. According to wikipedia, Hanadan is the most best-selling shoujo manga in Japan, and definitely it's crazily successful: there have been numerous reprints, a successful anime series, a hugely popular Taiwanese AND Japanese drama adaptations, etc etc. It really makes me think that the story is the most important thing even in such a visual medium as manga. Because while the art in later volumes is rather nice in a spare sort of way (and miles better than the somewhat horrid art in the earliest volumes), the mangaka of Hanadan is nowhere near the gorgeousness of other manga artists.

And also, if you think about it, both Tsukushi and Domyouji are rather atypical for shoujo heroine and hero. Tsukushi is far from the usual manga heroine, who is usually very pretty, loved by many, a little adorably ditsy, and interested in boys. The most you can say about Tsukushi's looks is that they are average (and once she chops off her hair, she is definitely plain), she is just as interested in studying hard and making something of herself, as she is in any romantic complications, and as to popularity? The first few volumes the girl endures some horrid hazing, to put it mildly. As to Domyouji, he is very tall and very rich, which does make him shoujo hero material. Oh, and he saved her about seven billion times. Except...he is also pig-headed, selfish, stubborn, and let's be frank, not very bright. And if you want a sweet extravagantly romantic gesture, look elsewhere. He is as likely to insult Tsukushi as anything. Of course, she will insult him right back.

Ultimately I think that is why Hanadan is so enduringly popular: it's a sort of shoujo Pride and Prejudice, isn't it? A strong-willed woman and a flawed guy who loves her for her strength. And they bicker :) Because ultimately, with all his flaws, the reason I think Domyouji is so awesome is because he is so unswerving in his love of Tsukushi. Because he loves her because she is scrappy, and strong, and heck, when roused, fearsome.

And that whole love of Hanadan got refreshed by that volume 26. Because, oh the mangaka gets it so right, they are so teenage. Great love or not, the foot-in-mouth syndrome is so present, and so is their bickering. I love it when she tells him she made lunch for him and he is so delighted. Heh. But my favorite scene is when their well-meaning friends lock them together in the summer house. Heh. I love when she says he is always 'annoying there to rescue me' (or similar) and he is all, 'you could drop 'annoyingly.'' Heeeee. Or when they kiss, and he grumbles that his neck is hurting because she is so short, and she could at least stand on tiptoes and she shoots back that it's just he is freakishly tall. Never a quiet moment. Or when (because there is so a bed there) she is trying to come up with a talking topic so as to fill the silence, she asks how come he is such a good kisser, because she is his first girlfriend and then her brain catches up with her and she is all 'OMG, what is my mouth saying?' but she perseveres and continues 'did you practice? Who on? A Stuffed animal? A human? F3?' (at that latter, the slashers go wild, heh). And he matter-of-factly tells her that when they were in middle school, Soujiro and Akira always had a swarm of girls around them and sometimes girls would want to make out with him, so he'd be kissing with them, but then when he got to high school he stopped because he thought it was childish. And (because she asks) he is all 'only kissing, it's gross to have sex with someone you don't know.' EEEEEE! That is such a Domyouji thing to say. In some ways, he is the most infantile of the F4, but in some he is the most grown-up one. And, of course, he would be the straightforward one and tell this to Tsukushi, not even thinking to lie or hide. And also, I love how to him, of course, you don't have sex unless you love the person. As Tsukushi ends up thinking, he is both pure in spirit AND annoying (and then wonders why she fells for someone unstable :D) The funny thing is, I could totally picture MatsuJun and Inoue Mao (or Jerry Yan and Barbie Xsu) do this scene. EEEE! How much do I love both the Japanese and the Taiwanese live actions.

my favorite aspect of HYD is how they both learn to be loving and to grow up. Tsukushi learns to trust her feelings and to trust Doumyouji and he learns not to be quite such a jerk XD and hten they live happily after. Or something.

Ohh, I love the whole thing so much. I never watched the TW series though ... couldn't find a dl.

That's true: they both learn and grow. They are actually rather believable young people, in their own quirky glory, which is awesome.

Re: MG. It has smaller production values, but is much closer to the manga (and angstier). I love both in very different ways.

Is it on crunchroll?

my son (10) loves it too. We talk about how Doumyouji learns to be a better person by being kinder and not insisting on having his own way all the time and Tsukushi learns not to be so scared (she is scared, a lot of the time, although not in the obvious ways).

Please don't report me to ACS.

Since I don't know what ACS is, it's unlikely.

And it's true, Tsukushi is scared. Not physically, as she is quite intrepid. and she doesn't back down to bullies or evil people in general (I love the scene where she slaps Kaede. Don't remember if it was in live action but in anime and manga). But emotionally, she is scared, scared to open up and let herself go. Quite a contrast to Domyouji who is fearless about everything, which can be a bad thing (a little common-sense trigger would be nice in that boy) but is also a really good thing when he falls in love with Tsukushi, because then he is not afraid to show it.

Btw, my all time favorite drama scene is in meteor garden, when he gets beaten up so she won't be hurt. I love it in Hanadan, too, but love MG version bette (because the Sakurako thing in Hanadan doesn't make sense to me :P)

I'll take look. I have a hard time with how poor the video quality is on crunchyroll, but I love Barbie Hsu and I'd love to see her in that role!

It depends on the vid quality. They have some pretty high def stuff, but I think you have to be a paid member. membership is cheap though.

If you can't find it, let me know and I can lend you a DVD copy.

try aznv .tv

You need to have winamp (or you could dl it for free) but it's generally pretty good.

That's a cool MV. My inner debate is whether to watch both HYD season now or wait until it's closer to the time when the movie will be released.

I agree with everything you said! Mars is also my most favorite drama! but still, HanaDan is just like you said, everything :) no boring episode, the cast is PERFECT, there's nothing bad that I can say about it XD This is the drama that I would watch over and over again without getting tired of it :P

i know what you mean... regardless how many times i have seen and read the scans of HYD i can't help but keep going back to it..... tsukasa as this violent spoiled brat who learns that the world doesn't revolve around him but more importantly he learns to love someone whole heartedly and tsukushi as the ordinary but extraordinary girl.... it's one of my fave OTP......

and are you excited about the HYD movie????

And yeah, I am psycho excited.

Hi there! Friended you recently, so I'm going to jump right in with the comments :D

Hanayoridango is one of my all time favorite mangas.. Probably because I grew up reading it, so it's kind of like, one of my coming of age shoujo manga. I find myself re-reading it every so often because it's still humorous even after all these years.

I loved the Taiwan version of HYD more than the recent Japanese one. Maybe it's because Big S portrayed Tsukushi as the version I liked to see - hardworking and very no-nonsense.

Gosh, it makes me want to rewatch the drama now :D Not to forget, F4 were hot beyond words.

Hi! Friended you back!

I got into Hanadan via the anime. [info]katranna kept reccing it when I just into anime. It took me forever to get into it (I found the anime style odd) and I still remember thinking 'Domyouji is the hero? I loathe him!' Hah. But then all of a sudden, it was as if a switch flipped on and I fell for it.

I prefer Meteor Garden to Hanadan too, I find it more faithful to the manga. And Taiwanese F4 was hotter than the Japanese F4. But I love the Hanadan adaptation too...

I loved watching Hanadan with one of my friends, and we would have talks on who Tsukushi should be with. I'm a firm Tsukushi/Tsukasa shipper. Actually, I like both adaptions: Hanadan & Meteor Garden, each good in their own way :D

I absolutely agree with pretty much everything you said about Hanadan. Because while I love all asian dramas and manga, nothing has ever come close to blowing me away like Hana Yori Dango has. The character dynamics, the relationship between Tsukushi and Domyouji, the evolution throughout the series--it's all so amazing. And yeah, I feel that the art is definitely not the main draw; it's the story all the way. Personally, I love Tsukushi so much because she is the atypical heroine. She isn't a ditzy pushover who's overly cheerful all the time, and I love her so much for that.
Pride and Prejudice was my favorite book in high school so it makes complete sense that I adore the bickering relationship between Tsukushi and Domyouji. I'm pretty sure that all of my friends have grown tired of me proclaiming my love for Domyouji/Tsukushi, but their relationship is so unique and amazing that I just can't help it!

I have to admit that while neither version of the live action come near being my absolute favourites and the manga's art prevents me from reading more of it, Hanadan IS the perfect shoujo thing there is. The OTP is just so many levels of awesome. And the side characters are endearing, too. It just works.

I'm a sucker for Pride & Prejudice and the comparison makes sense here.

he is both pure in spirit AND annoying

He really is the romantic, isn't he? She's his first & only love & it really shows in the way he interacts with her & his expectations from their relationship.

Then again - that's the thing about the Jversion in general - it's more fairy tale romance than reality. Part of me wishes the J version had as much kissing as the T version. But a huge chunk of me loves that the romance in Hanadan isn't anywhere as physical as in Meteor Garden. And I hated when Domyouji actually hit Makino in MG (although that's much more realistic) becuase in Hanadan Makino was the line he never crossed. He went to get her himself when she left, he never hit her - it's a romantic thing that, while less real, is what I adore about the show.

I love in the 2nd season when he comes over to her crappy apartment & he can tell, just by the way she reacts to Rui's name, that something happened. And she denies & denies & he knows it's a lie.

Hanadan (J version) is something I seriously watch every few months. And if I want to hook someone on asian dramas, there's no faster way than watching Hanadan. I've enlightened (or corrupted) several students at my hubby's school using Hanadan. ;)

This was such an awesome post!

I think ultimately I prefer MG over HYD because of the kissing and the general more 'grown-upness' (the slapping didn't bug me, just as it didn't in the anime, because it was so human, so understandable at that point). And in Hanadan, he tried to get her gang-raped, potentially? (I prefer to assume he just wanted them to rough her up and it went out of hand but in MG they made the 'out of hand' thing explicit).

Ooooh, now I want to rewatch both!

Meteor Garden was my first drama ever, and holds that special place in my heart. Maybe it was low budget with corny acting, but it totally won my heart. Hanadan had an entirely different feel to it, but I adored it nonetheless. Watching the second season as it came out... I explored the limits of my vocal chords with endless squeeing ;D. I think I'm one of those Hana Yori Dango nuts that love it regardless of form.
