The internet has been on the fritz and thus I have been unable to watch ep 23 of Brilliant Legacy on viikii. But soooooon, sooooon, my precious. chipperYou know, I was thinking: Seung Mi really should have read the writing on the wall a long time ago about Hwan. Yes, he is in love with Eun Sung but if it wasn't Eun Sung, it would have been someone else, it would not have been Seung Mi. True, Hwan is always sweet with Seung Mi, ever since high school - he was sweet with her even when he was a jerk to everyone else. But that's the thing - Hwan treats her, and has always treated her, as a loved little sister. And men don't fall in love with their little sisters, not unless this was a very different kind of drama. Now, there is always a possibility for two people in a platonic relationship suddenly, one day, to discover that they love each other - but that's the thing - they have to always view each other only as friends or similar before that and not even face the romantic possibility until one day... But Hwan does not only know Seung Mi for years, he knows she loves him and that still wakens nothing in him - no responsive emotion. I think that's it, Hwan would never see her as a woman, she should have been expecting it. Not to mention they are not very compatible - if Eun Sung is any indication, Hwan's taste in women doesn't run to Seung Mi's type at all - and I am not even talking about lying evilness here - Seung Mi presents herself as quiet, reserved, old-fashioned, emotionally clingy. Have you seen Eun Sung? She is boisterous, opinionated, bouncy, and fun-loving. She is fun. Oh, and not related to the above, but how much did I love the scene with the candy in ep 22 and Hwan reflecting on the true value of money. What I love so much about BL is that romance is the cherry on top of an already excellent sundae, it's not everything - love is not everything in Eun Sung's storyline and every lesson Hwan learns is not connected to Eun Sung. Anyway, since I was not able to watch BL, I started the already downloaded Friend. I think I am in love with it from the first seconds. ![]() ![]() ![]() So beautiful.

Filmi-girl reminded me of my love for the Victorian novelist Anthony Trollope so I am currently reading "Can you forgive her?", a novel about a woman who vaccilates between two very different suitors. My favorite characters, however are Glencora and Plantagent Palliser, a married couple who actually have to work on their marriage - theirs was arranged. Glencora is torn because she cannot give her husband a child (initially the reason he wanted a wife) and because she still loves a former flame. I just love this bit so much: I would rather have you for my wife, childless, - if you will try to love me, - than any other woman, though another might give me an heir. Will you try to love me? It's Plantagenet talking to Glencora. I love it doubly much because he is so incredibly emotionally reserved. Mmmmm.

I remember reading about this a long time ago and feeling so wonderful that people like this were out in the world (it's an article about a wealthy couple who, in addition to their own biolgical children, adopted over a dozen kids, many of them with developmental disabilities or who have been abused). Well. According to CNN, the couple has been found murdered, victims of a home invasion. I keep thinking about how awful this is - that people who were so wonderful were killed, senselessly. And about what will happen to these children - there is no rush of people who want to adopt a child with Down's not to mention the thought of some of these kids, who have been previously abused, ending up in foster care? And losing their parents and their normal life all over again. GOD. How horrible! I hope the people who killed them rot forever in jail. Or, if you are like me, and believe in death penalty, end up with that as their punishment.

Are you judgmental about drama watching? And what dramas trigger that reflex? confusedI love a lot of dramas and don't care for a fair number of others. But usually, when I come across people who dislike the dramas I adore, I treat it as 'tastes differ' and that's that - if you severely dislike It Started with a Kiss (Taiwan) or Beautiful Days (Korea) or Mukodono (Japan), I will totally go with 'I love them but I can see how someone would not.' But there is a very small, core group of dramas I love where, if you majorly dislike them, I do judge you. I don't think the person who dislikes one of those dramas is a lesser being with bad taste or anything of the sort but it does point out to me that she and I have a big difference in taste on some very basic level. A part of it is that with those few dramas I genuinely cannot comprehend how someone can dislike them because they come across as so perfect to me, but it's also because they trigger such a visceral emotional response in me that someone disliking them feels not only alien but (utterly irrationally) it triggers my protective instinct. One sentence summary: there are a few dramas, where if you dislike them, I will conclude our tastes are fundamentally different on a certain level. Anyway, what are those dramas? TAIWAN: The Outsiders; Mars; Black and White JAPAN: Pride, Utahime, Aishiteiru to Itte Kure KOREA: Legend, Mawang, Capitol Scandal, My Girl, Spring Waltz I do have an even smaller group where I will judge you for liking a drama. It is basically only two dramas - Summer x Summer and My Love Patzzi. If you are rabidly in love with either of them, I will be boggled. Anyway, do you have any dramas which trigger your judgmental complex? And what are they?

Am on episode 22 of Brilliant Legacy curious*am not sure what I love more - the scene with the blanket or when Hwan extends his hand to catch drips in a cave so Eun Sung won't get wet - what I really love about Hwan is that he is incredibly straightforward - he doesn't play games and he has no 'shame' - he is in love with Eun Sung and he doesn't care if Other Girl and Other Guy know it. * Speaking of other guys, poor Jun Se oppa - I find him dead boring, but he is a nice guy. Awwww. ETA: I take it back. Fuck off and die, jerk! You are trying to be manipulative and guilt Eun Sung into not dating Hwan? Fine. But anyone who has the gall to tell Eun Sung she shouldn't date Hwan because of Seung Mi's love for Hwan while knowing the way Seung Mi treated Eun Sung and wrecked her life is not only insane but should die in a ditch. Preferably after contracting leprosy. How Jun Se can even dare say out loud that Eun Sung owes Seung Mi anything? Hell, if I were Eun Sung, I'd date Hwan even if I didn't like him just to pay Seung Mi back some small percentage of misery she and her Monster Mom inflicted on me. The only thing Eun Sung owes Seung Mi is a bunch of hard slaps and Jun Se trying to pretend otherwise for his own selfish reasons is SICK. I don't care if he told Eun Sung she shouldn't date Hwan because she owes Jun Se himself too much and it would hurt him or even because of family issues (her missing brother, the fact that Hwan's family hates her etc) but he is trying to come across as unselfish and in the process the justification he is trying to use is inexcusable. *puke* * Ahhhh, Seung Mi. UGH BITCH. (The glee of viikii commenters in anything bad that happens to her is hilariously delicious). Actually, the drop scene is better than the blanket scene for me because Seung Mi is there to see it. HEEEE. In your face! I want Hwan and Eun Sung to make out and send you the video which you would be forced to watch. In jail. The funny thing is, I don't hate any of her OTP-interloper stuff, I hate the way she wrecked Eun Sung's life - keeping her father away from her, not returning her money, wrecking her new-found place in a new family, etc. I would be happy with anything that hurt her - and her weak point is Hwan. I would love her face to be ground into the OTP not because she should be punished for loving Hwan or because she interferes with Hwan/Eun Sung (she doesn't, really) but because she needs to be punished in some way for the damage she has inflicted on Eun Sung through selfishness and maliciousness. * THE KISS. It was the most gorgeous first kiss I have seen in a kdrama since...Spring Waltz, also starring Han Hyo Joo (she is awesome!) I am not sure what I loved more - the dreamlike atmosphere, what Hwan told her right before, or the fact that it was on a rickety, unstable bridge which is totally symbolic for how the ground has shifted under their feet utterly, emotionally. * Lee Seung Gi is much too young and doesn't look at all like my type normally, either (there are no chiseled features in evidence) but he acts Hwan so well and the character of Hwan is so amazing that somehow I realized I find him ridiculously sexy as the eps progress - in each ep he is better-looking than the previous one and now I find him completely gorgeously irresistable even if objectively I realize he isn't. I have also started Eyes of Dawn - I think I will have to devote of block of time to it as it does not look like anything you can watch casually. Also, sort of need to prepare myself - the heroine gets brutally raped in the first 10 minutes! I knew it was about comfort women but I guess I thought they would ease into the brutal parts of the storyline - they did not.

(One of the things I adore in this drama is that the villainess is not an OTP interloper at all, and the stepsister, whom I also hate, is not an interloper either - I hate her for many reasons, none to do with shipping). In less rage-inducing news, Hwan gave her the nicer lunch! He bought a cheap one for himself and a really nice one for her. OMG!11111111111

I stayed pretty spoiler-free for the first 18 (which if you know me is a huge deal) but now am looking spoilers up like mad just to have my BL fix! Icons! I need icons! Also, does Hwan really tell Eun Sung (in ep 21) ( Shippy spoiler ) If so, I might have just went to shipper heaven. I have also decided that my crack ship for BL is Jun Se (the Other Guy) and Hye Ri (Eun Sung's Best Friend). How can you not be excited for Swallow the Sun, coming out next week? contemplative![]() Plot: "Sun" revolves around three main characters: Jung-woo, Su-hyun (Sung Yuri) and Tae-hyuk. Jung-woo, played by Ji Sung, lives his life as a poor orphan until he saves the rich and powerful Jang Min-ho's life. His life takes a turn when he swears to serve Jang and his son Tae-hyuk as a servant, but when Tae-hyuk, played by Lee Wan, starts to demand more than Jung-woo can handle, he starts to wonder if he can continue. Things get complicated when Jung-woo is suddenly sent to prison instead of Tae-hyuk, and his journey for revenge and love begins from the cold ground of his cell.

bouncy![]() ![]() They are so ridiculously cute! Also, it seems to be a popular hobby among rich Koreans to go to an establishment serving food and amuse themselves by tripping the staff or throwing money at them. Remind me not to become a waiter in Korea. I love how Eun Sung becomes indignant on Hwan's behalf and he totally doesn't get it at first and thinks she is enjoying it because he tripped her back way in his jerk days in ep 1 (Gosh, they are like two different people now - Hwan of ep 1 and Hwan of ep 18, yet the character development has been so believable and gradual) and he is so shocked to find out that no, she is just actually mad because of how he got treated. AWWWW. He looks like a total little kid then. Another thing I love? (Not related to the above, btw). There are no stupid misunderstandings that drag on and on and on because people are too stupid to talk - people here talk and explain themselves. I am almost done with ep 19 btw. So far, ep 18 was my fave. GUUUH. SHIP. ( Caps through ep 17 ) Btw, did you notice that now they had her looking after Hwan/following him, a few times? Before it was just him always looking at her back, out of reach. SQUEE. Also, I must be the only person who dislikes Butler Pyo - he is so damn moral and smug, he irritates me. Also, the thought of him with Hwan's Mom creeps me out - she is pretty dim and a husband like that would totally be always schooling her and being her boss.

(Because Brilliant Legacy made me think of Bali, Bali made me think of Jo In Sung, and Jo In Sung made me think of Spring Day). cheerfulOnce I finish Brilliant Legacy, I think I will continue with SD, a drama I started some time ago, liked, and got sidetracked. The story of Spring Day is the standard kdrama fodder - two half-brothers in love with the same woman, amnesia, muteness, evil parents etc. I love all that stuff but let's be honest: I am in it for my biggest (with the exception of Kang Ji Hwan) kdrama crush: Jo In Sung (come back soon from the army, oppa! :P) You might know him as the bi bodyguard from that gay period epic Frozen Flower or the beyond-dysfunctional rich boy of Bali or the thuggish small-time gangster of A Dirty Carnival - all awesome dramas/movies, btw. Clearly inspired by his role in Bali (the only huge phenom drama out there that I adore, btw), he plays a high-strung son of horrible, controlling parents. His father is a total jerk. Granted, he doesn't beat him into unconsciousness with golf-clubs (Bali's Dad wins 'worst drama dad' competition, quite impressively) but he does smack him around, which doesn't strike me as effective parenting. Daddy is a head of a hospital so has decided both his kids should be doctors. The older son (the hunky, obedient Ji Jin Hee) loves the job, but Jo In Sung is about the worst doctor in creation - I think it's time to let your kid do something else when he repeatedly keeps telling you the sight of blood makes him faint. JID' Mom is a total piece of work - she dotes on her 'baby' but is horrible to her stepson, the product of Doctor Daddy's first marriage. Ji Jin Hee is lovely and sane but as the story starts, he goes off to look for birth mom. This being a kdrama, he finds Mom only to get into a car wreck, with her dying and him in a coma. Did I mention that before all of this, Ji Jin Hee became friends with a beautful mute woman (mute from trauma, not bilogically). They fell in love and he restored her speech. But after the accident, when she comes to the city looking for her OTP, guess who falls in love with her? Yup, her oppa's younger brother. He is younger than she is, he is a mess, and he is her boyfriend's sibling... Sign me up! From what I've read, it was supposed to have the heroine end up with Ji Jin Hee, the older bro, but they decided to go another way. EEEEE! Blahblahblah words, I just want to see this scene: Anyway, in some ways he basically plays a male Seung Mi (from Brilliant Legacy), only if Seung Mi weren't evil :) I am going to love it!

Help! It's a sickness. I have watched 15 (!!!!) episodes of Brilliant Legacy in under 40 hours! awakeIt got so bad that when we went outside it was odd to not hear people speak Korean. Whyyyyyy? I like BL, it's a solid drama, it's very entertaining, but it's not earth-shaking. Not Legend, not Mawang, not Capital Scandal. Not My Girl. Not even Hong Gil Dong or Save the Last Dance or Damo. (All of the above are in my favorites list). I like it a lot but it's not going into my Top 10 dramas or anything. But yet - I can't stop! You know, if instead of the insane writer they did have, they got the writer of this and the writer of Something Happened in Bali together, they could have produced the most awesome Hana Yori Dango adaptation ever, because between BL and Bali - they have basically got everything in Hanadan covered flat out - if Bali is Hanadan seen through a very dark lens, BL is Hanadan all kdramafied- it's the story of a rich jerk who learns to be a human and a poor plucky girl who won't let him get away with his ****, done right. (To be fair, I find Bali somewhat more realistic in its portrayal of rich families - this one is incredibly wholesome at best and whiny at worst. The Bali family would eat them for breakfast. And Hwan is a hell of a lot (severl hells, actually :D) more functional than the hero of Bali. But that is why Bali was a tragedy and this is a romcom). And I leave you with these two caps - it's Hwan right after two older ladies tipped him, flirted with him, and then smacked him on the butt. LOLOL ![]() ![]()

Grandma, I love you and all, but please PLEASE shut up the whole 'why don't you think of my paaaaaaaaaaaaain' act! I don't care for Hwan's Mom and Sis one bit, but but it's pretty expected for your family to be pissed off if you leave them penniless and will it all away on a stranger. It's your money and you have the right, but how on earth do you get off demanding they be happy about it and OK with you after this? Seriously - as I said, I don't care for Mom/Sis, but their reaction is freaking mild, considering (Hwan's a separate story as he's got his nose to the grindstone, but am not talking about him). It's your choice, nobody forced you - clearly you are picking the lesser of two pains for you. Which is fine but how you can expect Mom/Sis to still luuuuurve you is bizarre. Fine, you don't want to leave the family the company because you are worried about its fate - fair enough. But you are leaving your Grandkids and their Mom to basically starve once you die - you aren't even leaving them a house. And while it's reasonable enough to expect Hwan to get a job - guy went to college, etc, and even possibly Sis (depending on her education level), do you really expect their Mom, who is 50 if she is a day, and has no skills as she was a housewife, to start working from scratch? I think you are kinda going overboard, Granny.
